How PAK’nSAVE Papamoa used AI computer vision to make safety risks visible
Challenge
PAK’nSAVE Papamoa needed a more effective way to manage critical safety risks around forklifts, pedestrians and high-risk areas across the store.
Solution
R/VISION turns existing camera footage into actionable safety insights, supporting more proactive risk management.
Result
A 66% reduction in pedestrians too close to moving forklifts, a 77% reduction in aisle occupancy breaches and an 88% reduction in exclusion zone breaches.
The risk rules alone could not manage
In a busy supermarket environment, safety depends on more than having the right rules in place. It depends on knowing whether those rules are being followed in the moments that matter.
For PAK’nSAVE Papamoa, one of the most serious risks on site is the interaction between people and heavy equipment. Forklifts, loading areas, aisles and exclusion zones are part of the daily operation, but they also create moments where a small breach can have serious consequences.
That responsibility sits heavily with store owner Rob McGregor.
“When it comes to safety, the buck does stop with me,” he says.
PAK’nSAVE Papamoa already had safety processes in place, including training, documented procedures and staff sign-offs. But those systems could not always show what was happening in practice. The team needed a better way to verify behaviour on site, identify where risk was emerging and act before a close call became something more serious.

Making unsafe behaviours visible
PAK’nSAVE Papamoa used R/VISION to help close that visibility gap.
R/VISION uses computer vision to turn camera footage into practical safety insight, helping teams see where risky behaviours are happening and respond earlier.
For PAK’nSAVE Papamoa, that meant being able to better understand whether people were keeping clear of moving forklifts, staying out of exclusion zones and following the procedures designed to keep everyone safe. Instead of relying only on manual observation, paper-based checks or footage review after an incident, the team had clearer evidence of what was happening across the site.
That evidence made safety conversations more concrete. Staff were not just being reminded of a rule. They could see the behaviours that created risk in their own work environment and understand what needed to change.
It also reduced the time required to find the right information. Under the previous approach, reviewing footage could take hours. Now the team could get to the relevant facts much faster, helping them spend less time searching and more time acting.
Measurable reductions in critical safety breaches
The results showed a clear shift in behaviour.
PAK’nSAVE Papamoa saw measurable improvements across critical safety behaviours, including a 66% reduction in pedestrians too close to moving forklifts, a 77% reduction in aisle occupancy breaches and an 88% reduction in exclusion zone breaches.
Those numbers matter because they connect the technology directly to the behaviours that create
risk on site. This was not just another reporting tool. It helped the store identify risk, make it visible and reduce the types of breaches that can lead to serious harm.
For McGregor, that visibility matters at a personal level.
“As an owner of a PAK’nSAVE environment, the thing that keeps you awake at night is whether or not somebody’s going to get run over by a forklift,” he says.
R/VISION helped give the team more confidence that they were doing what they could to reduce that risk.

From safety visibility to operational insight
While safety was the first priority, PAK’nSAVE Papamoa is also seeing how the same platform could support broader operational improvement.
The store is looking at how visual insights could help track vehicle speeds in the car park and understand how long trucks wait in the loading dock before being unloaded. These are practical questions for a busy retail operation, where small delays and inefficiencies can add up across the day.
That wider potential shows how AI vision can become more than a safety tool. By turning video into structured insight, it can help organisations better understand how their sites operate, where risk is building and where improvements could be made.
Helping everyone go home safe
PAK’nSAVE Papamoa’s experience shows how AI-powered computer vision can make safety more visible, measurable and actionable in a high-risk, high-movement environment.
The store already had rules, processes and training in place. What changed was its ability to see whether those rules were being followed, identify unsafe behaviours before they became incidents and show people the close calls that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
For McGregor and his team, that is the real value. It is not technology for its own sake. It is a practical way to reduce risk, support better decisions and give the people responsible for safety more confidence that they are doing everything they can.
As McGregor puts it, the goal is simple:
“Everybody’s going to go home safe.”
